Notes for cooler evenings
The Terrace
After Summer
The most inviting outdoor rooms are not remade for autumn. They are adjusted, lightly and usefully, to the cooler air.
Bring warmth to the chair
Keep wool where it is easy to reach. A sheepskin softens timber and stone; a folded blanket makes another half-hour outside feel entirely reasonable.
Find the sheltered edge
Move the arrangement closer to a wall, garden room or the Shepherd’s Hut. Protection from the breeze matters more than adding more pieces.
Let light mark the evening
One or two lanterns give a terrace focus as daylight fades. Choose a calm, low glow and allow the garden beyond to remain visible.
